Field Trip 8: Urban Land Conservation: Conserving the Greater Forest Park Ecosystem

Forest Park is a 5,200-acre forested park located within the City of Portland. This trip will give attendees an introduction to Forest Park Conservancy’s (FPC) work and approach to conservation in an urban setting and to participate in a community project that will impact Forest Park’s ecological health. The first part of the trip will take the participants to the Ancient Forest Preserve, containing one of the few old growth forests left in the entire North Tualatin Mountains. During an approximately 3-mile hike on the trail loop in the property, we will learn about FPC’s approach to land conservation and forest management based on Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Indigenous practices and its long-term vision for this property. The second part of the trip will be to a private forested property with a conservation easement granted to FPC in 2021, where we will enjoy a picnic lunch and hear about pilot collaboration process behind this transaction where FPC worked with a local soil and water conservation district.
